In the now vast panorama of Florentine fashion and design institutes, one stands out with completely different characteristics.
It is the Design Campus of the University of Florence, inaugurated in 2012 in Calenzano (FI), which is entirely dedicated to study and research in the field of products and fashion design. A truly international structure: five thousand m2 in A-energy class, equipped with a biomass cogeneration plant. The Campus is home to state-of-the-art laboratories and classrooms with interactive audio/video systems, as well as the Museum of Design dedicated to the history and evolution of Italian products. Currently, the Design Campus offers a Bachelor’s Degree course in Industrial Design, a Master’s Degree course in Design and Fashion System Design, PhD courses, Postgraduate Masters and Specialization courses: An educational offer destined to expand thanks to the incessant work of the course president Elisabetta Cianfanelli.
On the strength of her experience as the former councillor of Fashion and Tourism for the City of Florence, she has clear-cut objectives for the Design Campus: «Here, we do not train designers but managers of creativity. Veritable designers who know how to develop the product even at the industrial level. They will be the future of Italian “Manufacturing 4.0” where artisanship and industrialization co-exist. This is why the students are involved with teacher- entrepreneurs and with concrete projects developed with companies in the territory».
