The degree course in “Textile and Fashion design”

The new three-year degree course for working in the textile and fashion industry

A new three-year degree course in “Textile and Fashion design” has been launched this academic year at the University of Florence at the PIN headquarters in Prato.

«It has been a great success - explains Professor Elisabetta Cianfanelli, Professor of Design at the University of Florence – “We have registered more than 300 students from all over Italy. There are two courses of study: one dedicated to textiles and the other to fashion product development and engineering. The possible professional outlets range from the definition of textile colours and dyes to fashion design, marketing, and quality control in production processes».

After an initial training common to both profiles, students will be able to opt for a specialisation in textiles or fashion in the second year of study. «The thematic macro-areas are design and figure drawing, from physical to digital, design laboratories, sustainability and technology, and integrated didactic courses between scientific and humanistic disciplines. These include the history of fashion, visual culture, marketing, and law. Apprenticeships in Italian companies are also planned. In some cases, the companies themselves asked us to train certain professions, as for the course in quality control.

Our uniqueness - she concludes - lies in offering a degree course within a general-study university, with professors belonging to six different departments for optimal all-round training. The structure of the degree course is designed on the principles of STEAM education with the aim of hybridising disciplines towards innovation».
