Amici per la Pelle: The tanners’ project to attract new generations to the leather production chain
Lessons, in-company visits, a first approach with the working world, healthy competition, and a good dose of creativity: these are the winning ingredients for Amici per la Pelle, the educational project that has become an indispensable appointment for middle school students in the tanning district of Santa Croce sull’Arno. An appointment that takes place every year to inform, intrigue and stimulate hundreds of second year middle school students, explaining the opportunities offered by the leather production chain.
That leather production chain around which the history and economy of the entire Tuscan tanning district revolves, covers a radius of 10 km with 100,000 inhabitants between Pisa and Florence: that is where, in 2010, the Young Tanners Group thought of a project to bring the new generations closer to the tanning industry. This is how the Amici per la Pelle was born: in 8 years, more than 5,000 students have been involved, together with companies and industrial plants in the district. Besides Santa Croce sull’Arno where the first edition was held, the project subsequently involved Castelfranco di Sotto, Fucecchio, Ponte a Egola and Santa Maria a Monte.
Thanks to the input received from the project, many of the students who participate in Amici per la Pelle choose to continue their training in the tanning field, both in high school and university. This is another way for the district to consolidate that balance between supply and demand for work in the leather production chain, with interesting and various professional opportunities.
