The New Frontier of Machine Embroidery Combines Stylistic Creativity with Design Innovation

There is a quality that sets apart those who make small revolutions: the desire to push beyond limits. This is what characterizes Valentina Spini and Mario Filosa, the couple leading Marval, an embroidery company with 70 years of experience (and an archive of 80,000 designs) that, over the past 14 years, has managed to renew itself and the market thanks to a combination of stylistic and technological creativity. «When I took over Valentina’s grandparents’ company, the expertise was extremely high. The way of working remained the same, but my design skills allowed us to make the leap: we modify machines to create stitches traditionally possible only by hand, or by machine but with great time investment. An example? We manage to make a carpet stitch composed of 60 colors using a 12-color machine, achieving a result that approaches digital printing in terms of precision», explains Filosa. This result is possible thanks to the continuous desire to improve, even in the most challenging moments. «The Covid period, which stretched out timelines and production, turned into an opportunity. We found solutions for processes that seemed impossible, and made investments, like the current headquarters in San Gimignano, which today houses 28 machines. The greatest satisfaction? Brands come to us knowing that we will find a solution when others say it’s impossible». This is demonstrated by their work with raffia, one of Marval’s specialties, which is now capable of reproducing 80% of manual processes by machine. «We strongly believe that we can always improve, both ourselves and the system we are part of. This, along with the energy of the more than 25 people who accompany us on our journey, truly makes the difference».
