Would you wear a wooden bag?

For the Spring Summer 2026 collection, Moschino presented on the runway a bag in calf leather entirely covered with bamboo sticks. Each piece was hand-painted and then woven, creating a mat with an irregular surface. For the same season, Saint Laurent introduced a capsule of mesh bags made with wooden beads.

Artisanal processes that have shaped bold pieces, but not isolated ones: over the years, several brands, from Chanel to Louis Vuitton to Dolce & Gabbana and GCDS, have showcased bags made entirely of wood, called wooden box bags.

«Wood is a versatile material, suitable for both sculptural creations and more discreet details such as handles, closures, feet, or structural panels, which give a unique character to the bag», says Oswaldo Filipponi of Filipponi Manifatture, a company specialized in artisanal wood craftsmanship.

In this regard, it is impossible not to mention the Mombasa by Yves Saint Laurent, made unmistakable by its asymmetrical handle, also offered in wood, or the iconic Gucci Bamboo. In fact, bamboo is not strictly classified as wood, because botanically it is a grass, but it is considered bamboo wood when processed to create rigid accessories.

Among the most refined woods are mahogany with its reddish tones and especially dark ebony, one of the most expensive. Finishing also makes a difference: the most luxurious processes involve glossy varnishes, while matte finishes are easier to manage and have a more sporty character.
