Why Do Louis Vuitton Bag Handles Get Darker Over Time?

It’s not simply a matter of wear and tear, but one of the most appreciated characteristics of vachetta leather, a type of bovine leather that changes according to its owner

Anyone who has ever owned or handled a Louis Vuitton Monogram canvas bag knows it well: over time, the beige leather handles and trims become darker, often developing an uneven coloration. But what may appear to be a flaw is actually an intentional choice that has become a distinctive signature of the Maison. This is vacchetta, a bovine leather capable of carrying the marks of those who use it.

Handles, corners and edges are the areas most exposed to contact and wear and therefore tend to darken more quickly than the body of the bag. This is precisely the aspect that Louis Vuitton has chosen to emphasise in order to make each bag unique, through the use of vacchetta leather. When left untreated, this leather has a colour ranging from ivory to light beige, before developing warmer shades, from honey to amber, through exposure to light, the environment and contact with the skin.

This characteristic, together with its versatility, makes vacchetta leather a highly valued material for a wide range of products. “Depending on which part of the hide is used, different products can be made,” explains Martina Squarcini of Conceria Il Ponte, a company specialising in the production of vacchetta leather and vegetable tanning. “The flank of the animal is used for small leather goods, leather trims and sandals; the shoulder for leather goods and footwear, while the butt, with its more compact structure and greater thickness, is particularly suitable for belts.”

A leather that is also appreciated for meeting the growing focus on more responsible tanning processes. “Vegetable tanning is a more sustainable process; in our case, we use quebracho and mimosa extracts,” continues Squarcini. “It is precisely this natural quality that preserves the authenticity of the leather and allows it to evolve over time — characteristics that are still highly sought after by the market.”
