Fifty years in leather chemicals means experiencing first-hand the transformations of leather, fashion and the processes that connect them. Active since 1976 and headquartered in Santa Croce sull’Arno, LMF Biokimica develops products and formulations for the different stages of leather processing, from tanning and retanning to dyeing and finishing. Over time, the company has complemented this expertise with technical assistance, laboratory research and fashion trend analysis, developing an approach that, on its 50th anniversary, also becomes the starting point from which to look towards the future.
The company’s history began with its relationship with the tanners in the local area. The founding partners’ intuition was to combine product supply with ongoing technical assistance, capable of addressing the real challenges faced by tanneries and supporting them throughout the different stages of production.
In the beginning, the partners themselves provided the assistance directly. As the company grew, the service was structured around an increasingly large team of specialised technicians. A willingness to engage in dialogue and an in-depth knowledge of production processes enabled LMF to work closely with its customers, sharing the search for the most suitable solutions to everyday challenges.
This technical culture was soon joined by another ability: observing fashion before its demands fully reached the tannery. Anticipating colours, effects and processes meant developing specific products based on emerging trends and making them available while the market was still beginning to formulate its demand. This aspect is even more relevant today, as creative cycles accelerate and suppliers are expected to respond more quickly.

At the same time, investments in analytical equipment and laboratory tools have grown, with these resources also being made available to customers for quality controls and assessments of the leathers produced. Research, technical testing and article development thus operate on the same level.
The 50th anniversary also serves to define what comes next. Among LMF’s priorities is the greater use, whenever technical conditions allow, of raw materials from renewable sources and characterised by a reduced environmental impact. This direction is consistent with the company’s ongoing commitment to more sustainable processes and solutions.
Investment in research and development will also continue in order to respond to a fashion industry that has significantly increased its pace in recent years. Alongside chemical innovation, LMF has identified another objective: continuing to enhance leather in its different types, from bovine to sheep and goat, highlighting its characteristics and potential applications.
For the company, strength, versatility and durability continue to explain the central role of a material that has accompanied humankind for millennia and continues to evolve together with the techniques used to transform it.
After fifty years, LMF has chosen to condense this continuity into a simple phrase: “As long as there is Leather, there is LMF.”
