Creativity without limits: new designers envision the jewelry of the future through 3D printing

 

 

Limits and opportunities, challenges and visions. Jewelry design, perhaps even more than leather goods or fashion, must operate within the boundaries imposed by technologies and materials, which sometimes restrict the designer’s creativity by imposing rules and limitations. In recent years, however, technological advancements have introduced innovative solutions that make it possible to overcome some of these barriers, offering new horizons of possibility to those working with metal. But what would a young jewelry designer do if they had access to an innovative technology that opened up a whole new world of possibilities? This is the question addressed by the contest launched by Leather&Luxury together with IED, dedicated to second-year students of the Jewelry Design course and developed in partnership with Legor and Taurini Pianeta Gemme.

 

The participants had the opportunity to design and produce a mini jewelry capsule using the Metal Binder Jet printer, an extraordinary technology that allows the creation of highly complex 3D metallic objects, brought to the Italian market by Legor in collaboration with HP. The jewels were further enhanced with the beautiful stones from Taurini’s catalog, cut and donated to the students to complete their creations.

The outcome was remarkable: students, working in pairs and combining their visions and inspirations, designed rings, bracelets, and brooches of incredible complexity, made possible only through 3D printing. The final works were presented to a jury of experts composed of Sebastian Galindo Plah, IED alumnus and founder of PLAH; Giacomo Sugliano, Designer and Gucci Cad Prototyping Specialist; Giulia Beltramini, founder of Coquillage Jewelry; and Francesca Zaccagnini, Editor-in-Chief of Leather&Luxury.

 

The winning project was UNVEIL THE HIDDEN, by Amélie De Maere and Justine Vanhumbeeck — a nature-inspired reflection on how even the smallest details play a crucial role in our lives, brilliantly combining the potential of Metal Binder Jet printing with the beauty of gemstones, without compromising creativity.
