Bottega Veneta’s fringes prove that savoir-faire lies in the details

Louise Trotter’s Spring Summer 2027 collection is a wonderful exercise in how to balance lightness and substance

Lightness. It is the key word of the Spring Summer 2027 show, in which Louise Trotter explores the concept of seasons after spending a year in Milan and experiencing the way the city changes with the weather, shedding and layering itself without losing any of its stylistic complexity, while at the same time making room for, precisely, lightness.

And fringes are the symbol of this sense of weightlessness: Trotter uses them to create movement, build volumes, add but also subtract. And she does so with a wide range of materials, from silk to raffia and, naturally, leather.

Leather is very much present this season, yet remains as light as a fabric. The designer explained that she sought to make it as thin as possible, working on the skiving process to remove as many layers as possible. The result is leather fringe that floats in the air, almost like feathers, stitched onto leather garments or unraveling a woven construction.

The sense of ethereality is even stronger when it comes to fabrics. On dresses, fringes contribute to the volume of the garment, enhanced by movement. The silk is printed and then divided into extremely thin strips, which are subsequently sewn back together to recreate the pattern and structure of the dress.

Lightness and structure come together once again in the raffia accessories, voluminous yet incredibly light, designed to be carried by hand or worn over the shoulder to face the summer with a lighter touch, without sacrificing a single centimetre of style.
